Time marches on (or The Grand Opening)

November 4, 2007

My neighborhood was all in a twitter this weekend. It was the grand opening of a new Ace Hardware store.

I wasn’t so happy about it to begin with. The city somehow designated this rather attractive city block, lined with modest, well kept 1920s brick bungalows as a TIF district (no blight in sight) to make way for the new store. Nothing against Ace Hardware. Their stores are great; but I hated to see so many nice homes razed to make way for it (and they cut down some of the most beautiful maple trees on the street).

Anyway, getting back the grand opening. You’d think people were there to see the second coming of Christ. Their already huge parking lot has been totally filled all weekend. People have resorted to parking on neighboring streets. I’m guessing paper towels for 25 cents a roll, fifty cents for a four pack of Charmin and $2 twelve packs of Pepsi products will do that to you (I got mine, bitches).
